We love roller derby, and one of our favorite things about the sport is the names of the athletes.

There was an interesting recent article in the New York Times about the disappearance of nick names in professional sports.  The writer, John Branch wants to know what has happened to the desire of sports stars to be known by great names like “Magic”, “Babe”, and “Crazy Legs”.

Obviously, Mr. Branch is not spending any time following flat track roller derby.

Names are so important to skaters that they even maintain a name registry.  Not only do you have to have a great nickname, you also have to have one that is yours, and your alone.
